One Hundred Views of Japan

Annapurna Pictures Installation

In late 2015, I was hired by Annapurna Pictures to create an installation composed of 72 custom-made glass panes for their office in West Hollywood.

Each pane has 6 celluloid film strips bonded to it with epoxy resin. The sequential frames highlight moments within scenes from all the films Annapurna has produced to date, including American Hustle, Foxcatcher, Zero Dark Thirty, and Her.

I'm very grateful for my dear friend Andrew Sachs' professional expertise, as he shot this remarkable series.

My mixed media work features carving and layering techniques inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock printing, sumi-e, cel animation and the constantly evolving art of the North American streetscape.

My approach to making art is directly informed by my experience as a design student at Harvard. I learned using traditional paste-up techniques that made extensive use of paper, adhesive, ink, paint, film, cutting and measuring instruments, photo manipulations and Letraset transfers. To those techniques, I’ve added my proficiency in digital design software.

When composing my pieces, I try to find harmonies that resonate from the interplay of figurative elements, simple geometries and seemingly chaotic drips and splashes.

I’ve long been fascinated by maps, topographical representations and diagrams representing what lies under the surface of the earth. I’m particularly interested in exploring the topography that arises from layering strata of collage elements. The resulting surfaces are further transformed by the application of resin. The resin allows the viewer to visually excavate the piece by engaging it up close, revealing the sedimentation made up of pigments and solids.

I was once on track for a career in architecture. As an undergraduate at Harvard, Professor Toshihiro Katayama was instrumental in shaping my understanding of form, color and composition. He was my professor. He was also my friend. As his Teaching Fellow, I helped him teach graphic design courses to Harvard Summer School students.

Over the years, I lost touch with Toshi. I moved to Los Angeles, explored several creative career paths and was almost felled by addiction. I struggled to reintegrate my broken psyche. An experienced professional writer, I was nonetheless unable or unwilling to work out my feelings by jotting them down. I fell back on my old love of visual interpretation and expression. It was so fundamentally accessible that it provided the perfect conduit back to myself. It helped me to rediscover a sense of purpose.

As I was preparing to reach out to Toshi, I learned that he had passed a few months prior. I was very sad to realize that I wouldn’t get to thank him for instilling in me what had turned out to be a life-saving appreciation for visual communication. When I most needed it, his teachings provided a beacon through a long, dark night. In his honor, I decided to show under the name Toshee. It’s my way of continuing a conversation with my teacher and friend.
